  Bronny James’s collapse and hospitalization were reminiscent of the collapse of the Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin on the field during a game in January. Hamlin said his cardiac arrest was caused by commotio cordis when severe trauma to the chest disrupts the heart’s electrical charge and causes dangerous fibrillations, but what happened to James is still unclear.

But if they use a defibrillator to give your heart a shock straight away, your chances of surviving increase to around 41%

  James is now in stable condition and no longer in intensive care. Depending on the cause, many players can safely return to play. Doctors will likely perform a comprehensive evaluation on James to determine the cause of his cardiac arrest. That will help inform a management plan for his health going forward.

  • Sports bra heart rate monitors offer a convenient, non-intrusive alternative. Typically, you snap a transmitter into a pocket located on the band, activate a digital watch or app with a heart-monitor setting, and start sweating. 

  • Calf or upper-arm monitors work similarly to chest straps. They, too, are considered to be a very accurate way to monitor your heart rate. 

   Other devices like smart rings and pulse oximeters aren’t commercially available yet. However, one of the advantages of using a sports heart rate monitor is its ability to provide instant feedback during exercise.
